As a community chartered credit union, Mid-Atlantic FCU strives to be an integral part of the surrounding Montgomery County community. Our employees are encouraged to be involved in the county through various networking, Chamber of Commerce, and volunteer opportunities. As a company, Mid-Atlantic FCU takes part in a number of activities that benefit multiple charitable organizations throughout the county. Some of these include:
Community Services for Autistic Adults and Children (CSAAC)
CSAAC is the largest provider in the nation to serve individuals with autism exclusively with comprehensive programs from early childhood through retirement. Mid-Atlantic FCU supports CSAAC's mission through volunteer time as well as financial support.
In 2009, employees from the credit union helped refinish cabinets in CSAAC's Northwood High School facility in Silver Spring. The project helped CSAAC's students enjoy a more aethetically pleasing learning environment. In 2010, employees assisted in painting several rooms of CSAAC's facility in Brookeville Elementary School.
Mid-Atlantic FCU also hosted a its second annual golf tournament in 2009 to benefit CSAAC. Ninety-four golfers participated and helped Mid-Atlantic raise $15,000 for CSAAC! Plans are underway for the third annual tournament in 2010.
Women Who Care Ministries
Based in Montgomery County, Women Who Care Ministries provides services and support to those in need throughout the county. Mid-Atlantic participates in their "Helping Kids Eat" program which provides healthy "kid-friendly" food items to low-income school children during the school year so that they can receive proper nutrition over the weekend. This year Mid-Atlantic FCU sponsored Clopper's Mill Elementary School in Germantown and provided the school with bags of food from February to June 2010.
Rebuilding Together Montgomery County
Rebuilding Together Montgomery County is a volunteer organziation that works in partnership with the community to address the needs of low-income homeowners, primarily the elderly, disabled and families with children. RTMC is committed to helping Montgomery County residents who have worked hard to own their homes but whose failing health or fixed income does not allow them to cover the extraordinary costs of home repair. Mid-Atlantic FCU participated in the 2009 Rebuilding Days on April 25. Seventeen employees and family members helped spackle, paint, build a shed and do other home improvemen projects for a local Germantown homeowner. Not only was this a great teambuilding experience but it also helped restore a fellow member of the community's pride in their home.
MAFCU plans to participate in RTMC's Rebuilding Days again in 2010 on April 24.
American Cancer Society - Rockville Relay for Life
2009 was the inaugural year for the Mid-Atlantic FCU "Mighty Bucks" at the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, Rockville. The event took place at the Montgomery County College Rockville campus on May 30 and 31. The team raised a total of $9081 for the American Cancer Society and place first among participating companies in funds raised. Employees also represented Mid-Atlantic throughout the day by taking turns walking on the track and participating in various fundraising events such as the "Road to Recovery" contest, pajama contest and "Miss Relay" contest.
The Mid-Atlantic FCU "Mighty Bucks" are starting preparations for their second year of participation in this great event on June 5 & 6, 2010.
Hospice Caring, Inc.
Hospice Caring, Inc. is the only non-medical volunteer hospice in Montgomery County. Every year Mid-Atlantic FCU participates in several fundraising events for this organization such as their Annual Staff Recognition Day luncheon, Golf Tournament and Halloween Bowl-a-thon.
Stepping Stones
Stepping Stones provides opportunities for homeless men, women and children in Montgomery County to regain their independence. Mid-Atlantic FCU helps Stepping Stones in this mission each Thanksgiving season by donating grocery store gift cards so that the shelter can purchase food items to prepare a proper Thanksgiving meal for their residents.
Shepherd's Table
Shepherd's Table's mission is to provide help to people who are homeless or in need by providing basic services, including meals, social services, medical support, clothing and other assistance in an effective and compassionate manner. Mid-Atlantic FCU holds an annual clothing drive to benefit Shepherd's Table during the holiday season. Employees have also volunteered to help sort through clothing at Shepherd's Table's Silver Spring facility.
